Body Sculpting Treatment Q&A

Body sculpting refers to any number of medical procedures that shrink areas of stubborn body fat and reshape the body to give it a slimmer appearance. Body sculpting has received a lot of attention for its ability to contour the body and slender figures. Thousands of procedures are performed every year, with more and more procedures becoming available for use.

Does Body Sculpting really work?

Yes, body sculpting eliminates fat cells and can reduce the appearance of fat on specific areas of the body. Body sculpting treatments kill fat cells by using heat, cooling, or ultrasound. You will see full results as the cells are excreted over the next couple of months.

What is a body sculpting?

There are different methods of body sculpting, from lasers and ultrasound to hot and cold treatments. At Suburban Healthcare Associates, we use a tried and true method called BeautiFill, an FDA-approved procedure that uses a slim laser wand to loosen and harvest excess fat cells from areas such as the hips, butt, thighs and abdomen. This special device is the first of its kind, and uses a laser to breakdown fat cells (without liquefying it), and gently suctions it out as it processes it.

This allows for a quicker extraction, preparation, and transfer of fat to other areas of the body or face. As well as the removal of fat cells, the laser tightens the skin, reducing the risk of sagging once the fat has been removed.

In a process called autologous fat transfer, this refined fat can then be grafted by your clinician into other areas to provide volume to cheeks, hollow eyes, and thin lips while softening nasolabial folds. It even has the ability to fill pitted scars or create more fullness within the breasts or buttocks.

According to a clinical study funded by the manufacturer, the biggest advantage of harvesting fat with BeautiFill is its average fat viability rate of over 95%. This is significant, as in traditional fat harvesting methods, 30–50% of fat cells that are used in breast fat transfer typically die within three months, and facial fat grafting patients may lose 40–60% of transferred cells. Fat transfer results would be unpredictable and carry risks of contour irregularities and asymmetry due to these poor viability rates. Thankfully, BeautiFill greatly minimizes these problems.

How is body sculpting done?

On the day of your procedure, your doctor will start by marking on your body where they’ll remove fat (the “donor site,” typically the thighs, abdomen, hips or butt). These areas are then numbed with a local anesthetic.

Your surgeon will make a very small incision within the skin and insert the BeautiFill wand. They’ll move it back and forth to capture fat cells, which will be suctioned out and processed right away inside a canister on the main device.

They’ll then use this processed fat to fill a syringe and gradually inject the fat into the area where you would like more volume.
