Instructions for Laser Treatments (Laser Hair Removal/ IPL Photofacial)
Pre-Op Instructions
- Avoid Sun Exposure:
- Refrain from tanning or sun exposure for at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment. Tanning beds and self-tanners should also be avoided.
- If you are exposed to the sun, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50) to protect your skin.
- Skin Care Regimen:
- Follow any specific skin care instructions provided by your practitioner. This may include avoiding the use of certain products like retinoids, exfoliants, or acids for 3-5 days before treatment.
- Medications:
- Inform your provider of any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter supplements. Some medications (e.g., isotretinoin) may need to be paused prior to treatment.
- If you have a history of herpes simplex (cold sores), an antiviral medication may be prescribed to prevent outbreaks after the treatment.
- Avoiding Hair Removal:
- Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams on the treatment area for at least 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Shaving is acceptable if necessary.
- Hydration:
- Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment to keep your skin hydrated.
- No Makeup:
- On the day of the procedure, arrive with clean skin. Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, or moisturizers on the treatment area.
- Shaving:
- If you are having laser hair removal, shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment. This ensures that the laser targets the hair follicle, not the hair above the skin.
- Jewelry
- Please remove all jewelry before the procedure or make sure that all jewelry worn is removable.
Post-Op Instructions
- Sun Protection:
- After treatment, avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50 every 2-3 hours if you must be outside.
- Redness/Swelling:
- It is common to experience redness, swelling, or a mild burning sensation in the treated area. This should subside within a few hours to a few days.
- Applying a cool compress to the treated area may help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Moisturizing:
- Keep the treated area moisturized with a gentle, hydrating lotion or post-treatment balm recommended by your provider.
- Avoid applying harsh or irritating skincare products (e.g., retinoids, acids, or alcohol-based products) for at least a few days.
- Avoid Scratching or Picking:
- Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the treated area. This can cause irritation, scarring, or infection.
- Avoid Hot Showers/Steam:
- Refrain from hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms for at least 48 hours post-treatment, as heat may irritate the skin.
- Avoid Sweating:
- Avoid vigorous exercise, hot tubs, and activities that cause excessive sweating for 48 hours post-treatment to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.
- Avoid Makeup:
- If you had a facial treatment, avoid makeup for at least 24 hours. If you must wear makeup, use gentle, non-comedogenic products.
- Healing Process:
- You may experience peeling, flaking, or scabbing (depending on the type of laser used). Allow the skin to heal naturally—do not pick or peel the skin.
- For hair removal treatments, you may notice hair shedding from the treated area within 1-2 weeks.
- Watch for Signs of Infection:
- If you notice any signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, fever, or pain), please contact us immediately.
